The brief lands as “build us a VR training experience for X.” Six months later, a learner clicks through a procedure, takes the headset off, and nothing measurable has changed. The technology worked. The learning didn’t.

If you’re evaluating VR for training — safety, high-consequence procedures, equipment operation, field response — the question you brief on determines almost everything that follows.

Ask This, Not “Can You Build a VR App”

The weak brief: “Can you build us a VR training application for this procedure?”

The brief that produces a system worth deploying: “We need to teach someone to perform this procedure safely and competently. How would you design the experience so VR demonstrably improves competency — and how will we measure that?”

That single reframing forces a partner to answer for pedagogy, assessment, and evidence, not just polygons and interactions.

What Separates a Real Simulation From a Click-Through

A weak experience is a video with extra steps: put on the headset, watch an instructional sequence, click through the procedure, take it off. A strong one puts the learner in a loop — enter the environment, identify the equipment, inspect for hazards, make decisions, perform the procedure, make mistakes, experience consequences, receive feedback, retry, and demonstrate competency against a score.

That loop — mistake, consequence, feedback, retry, assessment — is where VR earns its cost, because it’s the one thing classroom, video, and on-the-job training struggle to deliver safely for high-consequence work. Without the assessment layer, you have an experience. With it, you have a training system that produces evidence a regulator, insurer, or head of safety will accept.

When VR Is the Right Format — and When It Isn’t

VR is worth the investment when at least one of these is true: the real environment is dangerous, expensive to access, or can’t be interrupted for training; mistakes carry serious consequences; you need repeatable, standardised assessment across many learners or sites; or the procedure requires spatial judgement that 2D media can’t convey.

If none of those apply, a well-produced video plus supervised practice is often cheaper and just as effective — a good partner will tell you that themselves. It’s the same principle behind our GreenSpot Framework: the technology has to fit the problem, not the other way round.

One Module, or a Platform?

If you expect to build one training scenario and stop, commission a module. If you expect to build five, ten, or fifty — across sites, roles, or procedures — commission a platform and treat scenarios as content on top of it.

What to Ask a Partner Before You Commission Them

Five questions that separate serious partners from vendors selling headsets: How will you design the assessment layer? (If the answer is vague, walk away — assessment is the product.) What does the mistake-and-consequence loop look like in your proposed design? How will this integrate with our LMS and competency records? What happens after deployment, when we need to author new scenarios? And what evidence will you produce that competency has actually improved?
